Who says abs only go up and down? The Oblique Crunch is here to sculpt the sides of your midsection, turning your waist from a straight tube into a waspish work of art. This beginner bodyweight exercise targets the obliques — the muscles on the sides of your abdomen that rotate, twist, and side-bend your torso, and that make you look like you actually have a waist instead of just a rectangular torso.

You lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, but instead of crunching straight up, you twist your torso to one side as you raise your shoulders off the ground, bringing your elbow toward the opposite knee. It's a regular crunch that took a detour, hitting the oblique on the side you're twisting toward with focused precision. You can alternate sides with each rep, or do all your reps on one side before switching — both approaches work, and both will make your sides burn like you've been doing windmill exercises in a sauna.

The obliques are crucial for core function — they stabilize your spine during rotation, protect your lower back during twisting movements, and create that tapered waist look that makes your shoulders look wider and your hips look narrower. It's the muscular equivalent of a V-neck shirt — it creates a visual narrowing that makes everything above and below it look better. Crunch sideways, twist with control, and sculpt a waist that makes people wonder if you were born with different genetics or just do a lot of oblique work. It's the oblique work. It's always the oblique work.
